NEWSLETTER ARCHIVE
2009 may not be the year we recovered from the asset-backed securities recession, the year we rescued unemployment from double-digit purgatory, or the year we drafted meaningful bipartisan reform of the US heath care system. But is there any good news for 2009 ? Hell, yes! If nothing else, 2009 is the year when the reunion tour reigned supreme!
And The Waybacks are nothing if not eager to jump slightly-belatedly onto that massive industry juggernaut...
So, we're formally announcing today that our show at the new Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA, this Friday night, October 30, 2009... WILL BE THE BAND'S FAREWELL PERFORMANCE!
And what a venue in which to hold this historic show! The Freight and Salvage has been a Bay Area institution since the late 1960s, and it has just moved to a spacious new location in downtown Berkeley. The Waybacks have so many wonderful memories from the original Freight, and this will be our first (and of course, last) chance to perform in the hallowed new space that has already been christened by the likes of the David Grisman Quintet.
Friday, October 30, 7pm doors, 8pm showtime
The Waybacks -- FINAL SHOW
Freight and Salvage
2020 Addison Street
Berkeley, CA
OK, I recognize that regardless of what any unnamed hero bands of ours who may have named themselves after certain avian creatures may or may not have done in the past, it is TOTALLY NOT COOL to announce a band is having their final show only to attempt to cash in on subsequent reunion shows. For shame!
And I recognize that our performances on 11/1 in Arcata, CA, on 11/2 in Ashland, OR, and on 11/3 in Crescent City, CA, may muddy the waters somewhat.
And there's also our exciting announcement that we have been confirmed for next April at MerleFest 2010 with a Watson Stage performance on Friday. And on Saturday--back by popular demand--we'll be presenting the 3rd Annual Hillside Album Hour with some very special guests!
Nevertheless, there still is some truth to the exaggerated reports of our demise that may or may not have originated with this email. Fact is, after many consecutive years of hard touring, we Waybacks have decided that 2010 should be a mellow road year for us. We're planning to tour much less than we have in recent seasons, and we'll be focusing our efforts on some individual extracurricular musical endeavors… stay tuned for exciting news on that front…
Thus, while the truth is that our show at The Freight will not be our final show, it WILL be our final hometown Bay Area show for 2009. And we're going to hold only a select number of performances in 2010, so please don't take it personally if The Waybacks don't make it to your hometown over the next year. We love your hometown! And we love your local music venue (unless your local music venue happens to be that unnamed bar in Bristol, TN, that wrote us that bad check back in 2005… who, us, hold a grudge ?) Everywhere else, we love you and can't wait to get back… but 2010 may have to be a year off…
So if you've been itching for some Waybacks, or just think you might start itching for some Waybacks sometime over the next year, avoid the painful withdrawal and bet on a sure thing: This Friday night, The Freight and Salvage, Berkeley, CA. It's going to be an amazing night, in a spectacular new venue with vibe literally crawling out of the walls! And if you've been thinking about making a road trip or an air trip to see us play, you won't find a better opportunity.
Not to mention that the San Francisco Bay is positively BEAUTIFUL in October...
All the best to you, our friends and fans! We can't thank you enough for the support you've shown us over the years, and if you can't make it to Berkeley this weekend, we'll miss ya, and we'll hope to see you soon!

We Waybacks have made so damn much money this year, billions and billions, really, far more than we could ever hope to give away, more than could be stashed in a baker's dozen offshore bank accounts, much more than we could possibly launder through our small chain of cut-rate butcher shops, even more than we could dream of squandering on a year's worth of excess baggage fees with our favorite major airlines.
We've got so much extra cash laying around that we decided to splurge on a fancy new web site. By the time you have received this fascinating email, the new site should be up and running (or it will be so very soon). There, you'll find a Media Player, band photos, news items, gig calendar and a dang ole genuine deluxe Rube Goldberg-esque gyroscopic oscillating stereophonic pulseratin' vaporizin' distillatin' steam-driven Waybacks Machine. The superbly stylized graphics were created by Chris Shaw.
Be sure to visit our remodeled Waybacks mercantile page and check out all the new CDs we have added to the collection:
~ Merlefest Watson Stage 2009, our Friday night main stage set from last April.
~ Merlefest Hillside Album Hour 2008, the infamous Led Zeppelin II extravaganza.
~ Secret Stage Mixes - Volumes 1,2 & 3, live shows we recorded from the stage in 2008.

I composed a really hilarious and informative newsletter last week full of performance dates and witticisms and bon mots and obtuse pop culture references so you'd see how clever I can be and maybe you'd look at the schedule and decide to come see the Waybacks play this week but then on Tuesday when I was walking to school a mean nasty Chupacabra jumped out at me from behind the taco truck and scared me and knocked me down and ate my homework and stole my milk money. Stupid Chupacabra.

Secret Stage Mixes are go!
We are happy to announce the arrival of three little bundles of download-able musical joy - our very own Secret Stage Mixes. Recorded surreptitiously from the stage last year, these are the first of an ongoing series which have been hand-picked by our panel of experts and thoroughly inspected for sound quality and freshness. Thus far we've uploaded performances from the Rhythm & Roots Festival, The Mystic Theater in Petaluma, CA and the Tractor Tavern in Ballard, WA. Secret Stage Mixes are available only from our recently redesigned merchandise page. Go take a look. Have a listen. Do it!!
Merlefest and the Hillside Album Hour
We are completely thrilled and positively brimming with anticipatory glee to be returning to Merlefest 2009. This festival has been the annual highlight of our touring season since our first appearance there in 2002. We certainly would not be the huge rock stars we are today were it not for the support of Merlefest organizers, staff, and patrons over the past seven years.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of last year's Led Zeppelin II extravaganza, we've been invited to create another hour of hybridized rock 'n' roll mayhem at the final set on Merlefest's Hillside Stage. This year Festival Link is sponsoring a Guess The Album Contest with valuable prizes and gloating rights going to the lucky winner chosen from all correct entries.
We're hitting the road again this week. As part of our continuing efforts to become leaner, meaner and greener, inspired by the transformative eco-teachings of Dr. Herbert Garrison, we have ditched the old gas-guzzling stank-spewing chartreuse microbus. This season of change will see us traveling in style in our new fully electric Segway Sport Utility Vehicles. If you play nice-nice we might take you for a ride.
Mark your calendars. Call your friends. Let 'em know we're on our way. Here's where we're headed:
FRI. April 17 8:00 pm SKIPPER'S SMOKEHOUSE Tampa, FL We love this joint. Great food, great vibe. One of the few places we've ever been where the phrase "smoked mullet" can be uttered without a shred of irony. The Wildlife Refugees open at 8. Waybacks play at 9:30
SAT. April 18 3:00 pm STRINGBREAK Brooksville, FL Our old pal and swamp tour guide extraordinaire Mitch Lind throws one hell of a party at the magical mystical and beautifully rustic Sertoma Ranch in Florida's hill country. Two sets at 3:00 and 9:00 pm. Joe leads the traditional Vision Quest outing at 4:00 am Sunday.
SUN. April 19 4:00 pm BAY JAM 15 Islamorada, FL Our first Florida Keys appearance ever! 12 bands. Music starts at noon.
TUE. April 21 10:30 pm SUN DOG DINER Neptune Beach, FL We'll be going streaking on a nearby golf course afterwards. You're invited.
FRI. April 24 9:15 pm MERLEFEST Wilkesboro, NC We landed the closing slot on the Watson Stage Friday night! We'll be joined by a few very special guests. And earlier in the day: Warren and James songwriting workshop at 10:45 am, and James guitar workshop at 6 pm, both in the Pit.
SAT. April 25 11:45 am MERLEFEST Wilkesboro, NC Indoors at the Walker Center. Warren co-leads fiddle workshop in the Pit at 9:30 am.
SAT. April 25 5:00 pm MERLEFEST Wilkesboro, NC SHHHHHHH!!! It's a surprise. Waybacks plus extremely special guests for another Hillside Album Hour!! Which classic album do YOU think we'll play?
We hear tell that it's once again safe to travel to Texas, so we're gonna do just that:

THU. May 14 7:30 pm McGONIGEL'S MUCKY DUCK Houston, TX We had a great time here last fall and we're glad to be going back. Come see Warren play the "frugal sophisticate" as he attempts to lock himself in the wine room again.
FRI. May 15 10:00 pm THREADGILL'S SOUTH STORE Austin, TX This legendary Austin joint "celebrates the history of the Armadillo and its salad days of the 1970’s." I hear the preserved armadillo salad is to die for (or from). James Hyland opens at 9. Waybacks at 10.
SAT. May 16 8:00 pm PIONEER MUSEUM Fredericksburg, TX 2009 Roots Music Series featuring the Onion Creek Crawdaddies at 6, the Lost Pines at 7, and them dang ole Waybacks at 8.

Dear Friends, Fans, Music Lovers, Bowlers, Strollers and Stalkers,
So glad to see you again. You're looking swell, have you lost some weight? I love that color on you!
Times are tough, no doubt, and apparently we are all going down with the ship, but all this endless chatter about the controversial economic stimulus package is what has really got me in a tizzy. It's got my knickers in a knot. It's got me giblets in a grinder. Got my hump all in a cluster. How am I to refrain from constantly creating inappropriate juxtapositions of the terms *stimulus* and *package* or variants thereof? You're drifting into my catch, oui? Stimulus package sounds like a euphemism for those supercharged electrical underpants they use to "encourage" cooperation from the residents down at the farm in Gitmo. Help me, Spock!
And now, some news.
~ After a year of great support from you folks and our pals at Compass Records and radio programmers across the country, our CD "LOADED" finished out the year at number 29 on the Americana Top 100 list for 2008! We're sandwiched right between Emmylou Harris and Carrie Rodriguez. That's one helluva sandwich. I sure picked the wrong year to stop eating wheat...
~ Coming soon to waybacks.com: SECRET STAGE MIXES!! Sometime around mid-2008 we got into the habit of recording all of our live shows right from the stage. We'll soon be making some of these recordings available as mp3 downloads right from our home page. It could be as soon as the next few days that we'll have SECRET STAGE MIXES page up and running. Stay tuned...
~ Our shoes are newly shined; our mustaches have been waxed. Our faithful pack mule has been greased, fleeced and checked for ticks. Our Show Day clothes are freshly creased and pressed and scented and sorted. Our packages have been stimulated. It's high time we hit the road. Do come and join us, won't you? Mark your calendars. Tell your friends.
Here's where we're going:

We've just returned from a grueling journey to the 21st Annual Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival, which has been one of our all-time favorite events since we first set foot there way back in 2001. The setting is starkly gorgeous beyond compare, high on the Western slope of the rugged Grand Tetons. It's a magical place. The communal vibe is always strong, the backstage hang is always spirited, monster jamz and Rocking Good Times always ensue.
Flew into Idaho Falls Saturday evening on a CRJ puddle-jumper. The weather held firm - no bouncy-bouncy upon approach. All our baggage arrived without delay and with no obvious signs of tampering. We piled into a minivan and made haste for the mountains. After several wrong turns, a stop for square ice cream cones, some unscheduled roadside calisthenics (as we waited for a sizeable herd of Mormons to cross the road), and a few red onions, we pulled into the Grand Targhee Resort just in time for the traditional Saturday night Targhee closing set by our good friends and heroes the Sam Bush Band.
Sam's closing set at Targhee always culminates in a group jam featuring anybody who's within shouting distance of the stage wings. In all, 22 musicians were spotted on the main stage at midnight - Sam's band plus such luminaries as Tim O'Brien, Darol Anger, Rob Ickes, Bill Nershi, Tony Trischka, Drew Emmitt, three out of four Waybacks, etc. A noble cluster of highly skilled, emboldened and energized magicians united by sheer will to jam and by a collective delirium that only high-altitude oxygen-deprived summer nights can engender. RGTs abounded. Word.
I hear that the after-party was most epic as well. Elastic flying monkey slingshots. Spastic wind sprints up the ski hill. Much spirited rejoicing. A bit of mild food poisoning. The usual. Sorry to have missed it.
I myself missed the jam due to the fact that I was prowling around in the dark, with night-vision goggles and infrared equipped digicam in hand, hoping to capture some footage of the elusive mythical nocturnal beast know to many as the Teton Tingler. No know photographs exist of this mischievous critter. Some locals claim it resembles a squirrel with the legs of a Rockette, others say it’s without a doubt half chicken, half chooge. All we do know about it is that in certain Teton Valley towns the Teton Tingler lurks in the shadows of our slumber, fingers curled around the doorjamb, watching us, waiting impatiently for those first signs of soporific surrender then lunges forth with a desperate keening howl and a bony thumb upthrust. Don’t you dare turn your back on the Teton Tingler.

P.S. On July 23, 2008, in Effingham, IL, the Waybax did indeed bowl over 600 as a quartet. 603, to be exact. I guess I owe all of you a cherry phosphate.
No funny business this time, folks. Sorry. No time for the hardy-har-har this week. I'm too scared. The Republic of California has been ablaze for months. Experts tell us the U.S. economy is in the proverbial crapper. The sub prime mortgage crisis is tearing the middle class a new one. A big angry raging policeman chased me down a busy street in downtown Minneapolis last month, shouting and threatening to pummel me because I held an open bottle of root beer. I lost TWO consecutive games of online Scrabble this week. American Gladiators is back in production. Would somebody tell me, What The Freak Is Going On??!! All the feet washing up on the shores of British Columbia... Somebody please hold me.
Now, the news.
~ Our main man James Nash is all the rage this month. Check out the July/August 2008 issue of FLATPICKING GUITAR and the August 2008 issue of GUITAR PLAYER. He's also the featured artist at the Santa Cruz Guitar Company website.
~ Our latest CD LOADED is clinging tenaciously to the AMA Top-40 radio chart. 16 weeks and counting... Keep pestering your local DJs with requests for your favorite Waybax hits!
~ Our MerleFest Led Zeppelin II set is the top download at FestivalLink.net. Get yourself a copy here.
~ The Waybax bowling team has punched through the 500-pin barrier. If we can manage to bowl 600 as a quartet before the end of 2008, I'm buying all of you a cherry phosphate.

P.S. Oh excuse me Mister Tough Guy PoLeece Man - This aggression will not stand, Man.
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I knew a real nice girl who was blessed with a real nice pair of
Hee Haw® bib overalls when she was a child, or so she claimed. Late one summer night, as we huddled
together under horse blankets sipping vintage port and stargazing on the deck of some unchristened tramp
steamer crossing the Gulf of Alaska, waiting for the Northern Lights to emerge, she described the overalls
to me in great detail -stiff blue denim, covered in grotesquely colorful cartoon-ish caricatures of bucktoothed
mules wearing raggedy straw hats, crazed white space ducks, gargantuan zombie chickens, ETC.
In the 15 years that have passed since I first heard tell of this fabled garment I have uncovered no evidence
that would suggest that the Liberty Trouser Company ever made these overalls in adult sizes, but if you happen
to have a men's size XL pair laying around up in the attic or down in the cellar, please do let me know.
Speaking of The Waybacks, the new CD LOADED is still hanging tough on the Americana Radio Chart.
Back up to #9 this week. We have somehow climbed to the #4 spot on the BILLBOARD bluegrass chart,
a surrealistic occurrence which we don't even pretend to understand, but for which we are certainly grateful...
Because we miss y'all so much, we're going back out on tour tonight!
We sure hope you can join us somewhere en route. Mark your calendars. Tell your friends!

Dear Friends, Music Lovers, Honored Guests, Tree-Huggers, Sea People, Dap-Dippers,
Shape-Shifters, Flibbertigibbets and Stalkers,
These are historic times for all of us here at the Waybacks front office. Read on.
Our new CD "LOADED" debuted on the Americana Music Association'sTop-40 radio chart
at #29 back on March 24. Since then we've held our own amidst fierce competition from a
slew of strong contenders. I mean, seriously, have you heard Hayes Carll? Ya oughta.
And in this month's odd coincidence department, note that we're being chased up the ladder
of fame by the Wood Brothers, who have also recently released a CD entitled "Loaded." Dag, Yo.
Today we hold the #7 spot after an unprecedented - for us - fifth week on the chart.
Keep up the good work, folks - every request you make to your local radio programmer for a
spin helps keep us high on the charts!
The hard-working humans in the publicity department at Compass Records have been striking gold
for us this past month. Check out these upcoming press coverage highlights:
~ The final print issue of the venerated NO DEPRESSION contains a feature on the Waybacks
penned by Nashville journalist and musician Jewly Hight.
~ We'll be on the cover of the June/July 2008 issue of DIRTY LINEN! Check out our hyper-
kinetic severe double-deuce flying action shot!
~ GUITAR PLAYER magazine will run a feature on our very own James Nash in the July 2008 issue.
~ Check out the N.P.R. feature "The Waybacks: Power Trio and a Fiddler", an interview and performance
from Folk Alley, recorded at the WKSU-FM studios way back in February 2008.
~ High praise and good reviews keep rolling in: PopMatters.com; Country Standard Time.
MerleFest 2008. Man Oh Manischewitz!! They worked us hard this year and we loved every minute of it.
Monster jamz and epic RGTs were abundant. We were glad to host the Midnight Jam which spawned
some inspired picking and spirited collaborations from the likes of Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, Abigail
Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet, the Lovell Sisters, Bearfoot, the Wilders, Sierra Hull, Casey Driessen,
Bela Fleck, the Circuit Riders, Hot Buttered Rum, to name a few. A personal highlight for me was the
end-of-the-night wickety-wack bebop jam with Bela. CHECK IT OUT HERE.
Rumors abounded before our set on Saturday afternoon on the Hillside Stage. We initiated what we hope
will become a venerated MerleFest tradition - the "Hillside Album Hour," the premise being that we will
present a classic album in its entirety with the help of a plethora of special guests. Online bloggers posted much
advance specious speculative scuttlebutt that we would be attempting to cover Michael Jackson's "Thriller,"
the Rolling Stones' "Big Hits," Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" or even "In The Court of the Crimson King."
This year, in case you missed it, we performed LED ZEPPELIN II in its entirety. The mighty, mighty
John Cowan handled the vocals and guests Pete Wernick, Tom Rozum, Byron House, Shad Cobb, Tom Ball,
Phil Wade and Betse Ellis all stepped up and threw down! CHECK OUT THE VIDEO CLIPS HERE.
The Cow absolutely shredded in the role of the fearless pitch-perfect wailing Golden God!
Possibly the best time we've ever had on stage. And we get paid to do this!?!?
Mad props to James Nash for ton of advance prep work and the organizational strength to pull this crazy train down
the track. Extra credit points to all the Festivarians who braved the downpours and threats of lightning strikes
to rock with us on the hill. We're taking you all bowling!
Oh yeah, I guess it couldn't hurt to mention that we'll be playing in California this month.
We sure hope you can join us. Mark your calendars. Tell your friends!
Our performance schedule for the year is always a work in progress, so please be sure to keep
an eye on our calendar page for updated info as new performance dates are confirmed and added.

We extend a big group hug and a hearty "WHASSUP!" to all the Caped Crusaders, Glitterati and
all the other kind funky peoples who joined us on our recent tour with our buds Hot Buttered Rum
and Bob the amplifier gnome. We had ourselves a dang ole veggie bus/minivan convoy hurtling
through the mountains with them buttered boys and we enjoyed some epic monster jams and
old-fashioned brolific rocking good times.
More to come...
Speaking of rocking good times (RGTs), we Waybacks have decided to form a bowling team.
After our recent day off in Boise, where we visited the Emerald Lanes twice in a 24-hour period,
we have happily come to terms with our inner Lebowski. We bowl and we don't care who knows it.
Please don't tell Walter Sobchak, but we just might roll on Shabbos.
Our collective bowling style is, well, unique. Come out and roll with us sometime - you'll see why
Warren's nom-de-boule is Spazz, and you'll marvel at what Chuck can do with a day-glo pink 16-pounder...
Now we need your help with selecting a name for our bowling team so that we can get on with the
business of procuring customized gear and corporate sponsorships. Send us what you got.
Our latest CD on Compass Records, "LOADED", is now available for pre-order at our MERCH PAGE.
Here's what our friends at Compass are saying about it:
"For The Waybacks, musical evolution is a way of life and a spectator sport. They’re as uninhibited and
unpredictable as the eclectic San Francisco Bay area that claims them, but their experiments are invariably
sharp-witted and musically dazzling. They’ve been through changes for sure. Shake-ups even.
Now configured as a four-piece with a full arsenal of acoustic and electric instruments, The Waybacks
introduce Loaded, the boldest, rangiest and most exciting album of their career. Produced by Nashville
bassist Byron House, the folky underpinnings are still there, but after years of playing a huge range of
venues and festivals (including some major gigs with Grateful Dead founder Bob Weir) and reconfiguring
themselves around the hot guitar of James Nash and the fiddle virtuosity of Warren Hood, The Waybacks
are enjoying a refreshed repertoire – one that’s touched by Memphis soul, roadhouse boogie, Parisian swing,
classical, vintage blue pop and much more besides.
By stepping forward as songwriters and assembling their first project of entirely original music, they’ve found a
new collective voice before our ears. You’ll talk about it even though you may not be able to describe it.
Just evolve along with them and you’ll be glad you did."
The official release date isn't until March 25th; all pre-ordered CDs will be shipped on that date.
We will have it for sale at all of the upcoming shows.
The "add" date for radio is today, 3/10/08, so feel free to call your local station and request
it by name! We want the airwaves and with your help we'll reach the AMA Americana Top-40 chart.
Here's where we're headed. We sure hope you can join us.
Mark your calendars. Tell your friends!

Just the briefest of notes here to let you know that we haven't forgotten about you.
There's a new CD on the way -- "Loaded" will be our second release on Compass Records and

Waybacks effort to date. You're gonna like it...

James from The Waybacks here. Wow... the past few months have been a whirlwind of travel for us. Big thanks to all the friends who came out to see us in NC, SC, GA, TN, VA, NY, NH, MA, CO, UT, MT, NE, KS, OR, and CA--it was wonderful getting to spend some time with everyone out on the road!
So, after all that travel--often flying across the country several times a weekend--what now ? How about a few days of relaxation at home, followed by a new album!
That's right... we're heading into the studio on Monday (this Monday... really ?!?) to track a dozen or so brand new songs! Exciting stuff... this new material is just SCREAMING to be recorded--songs that have debuted at recent shows like Tired of Being Right, Conjugal Visit, and Black Cat (Warren's blazing Bach-and-Grapelli-inspired fiddle instrumental), as well as a handful of tunes that haven't seen the stage lights, yet. We're looking at an early spring release date for this new CD, possibly a debut at Merlefest 2008 ? Stay tuned... more details and periodic updates from the studio available on our home page.
Now for some personal news: Waybacks co-founder Stevie Coyle has decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career. We've shared many years of great music and memories with Stevie, so it isn't easy to see him go. But, Warren, Chuck, Joe, and I, are all very excited to see Stevie working on a project of his own, and we hope all you Waybacks fans out there will give him your support. Here's Stevie in his own words:
Howdy, Compadres -
Folks, it's been a long and wonderful run for me, but now my muses are calling me away to a new adventure. So here at the end of the band's seventh touring season, and with much gratitude to the guys and to you, I'm bidding a fond farewell to The Waybacks. Oh, I'll still be out there doing music! It's just that these days I find myself intensely interested in doing solo shows at intimate venues and at house concerts and in teaching fingerstyle guitar. Betwen the band and the circus, I have spent fully one third of my adult life on the road, so there's WAY too much sawdust in my shoes for me to sit still for too long. I'll be recording a solo CD these next few months and as soon as that's cooked to perfection, I'll be back out on the road gigging and teaching.
In the meantime, please don't be a stranger over at http://www.steviecoyle.com. I'll have tour dates and blogs and photos and CD updates as well as periodic offerings of individual song downloads, iTunes-style. There will also be preposterously self-aggrandizing propaganda available at my MySpace space,http://www.myspace.com/coylestevie. And if I may trouble you to help me with just a couple of housekeeping items, please remove stevie@waybacks.com from your address books, and for correspondence intended for me, please use stevie@steviecoyle.com instead.
As far as me staying in touch with all of you here in the virtual realm, well, I'd first of all like to thank you for enduring my frequently-over-caffeinated ramblings these past several years. Your indulgence has been much appreciated. Too, I will hope that I may invoke the old English canon law axiom that "silence betokeneth consent," and occasionally send news of my own new doings to all y'all. If you'd like to opt out of those periodic missives, just follow the appropriate "unsubscribe" link over at my site and presto, it will be done.
My sincere thanks to the mighty Waybacks, to our manager, Michael, to our agent, Mary, and to all the fine folks at Compass Records. It's been a great ride. And last but not least, my thanks to all of you for all the warm vibes and all the great times.
Onward and upward for all of us! I'll see you down the road.

Thanks for that, Stevie. It has been great working together, and next year promises to be a very exciting one with new album releases from both The Waybacks and Stevie Coyle.
Joe, Chuck, Warren, and I, will be heading to Nashville this weekend to begin recording our new album at Compass Records with producer Byron House. If you've never heard Byron before... well, actually... I'm quite certain you HAVE heard Byron play before. He has recorded and toured with a veritable who's-who of American music, working with Sam Bush, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Jerry Douglas, Jorma Kaukonen... the list goes on and on. Byron is one of those musicians who always has something exciting up his sleeve... take, for instance, that time last year at Suwanee Springfest when Byron suddenly transformed from mild-mannered Sam Bush Band bassist into a fire-breathing Robert Plant impersonator. Holy crap! If there was ever any doubt that Byron would be the perfect producer for The Waybacks, believe me, that sealed the deal! What can I say... we are all THRILLED to be working with one of our musical heroes, and we can't wait to hear how this album turns out.
Byron's quite a road warrior in his own right, and he'll be taking next weekend off from the recording schedule to play some shows with mandolin maestro Sam Bush. Rather than letting Joe try his luck "reinvesting" our album budget at the Nashville craps tables, we decided to go play a show next weekend ourselves:
Sat, Oct 13 at 8pm
SHAKORI HILLS GRASSROOTS FESTIVAL
Chapel Hill, NC
Donna The Buffalo, The GreenCards, Snake Oil Medicine Show, Menage, Toubab Krewe,
Jim Lauderdale, The Duhks, John Jorgenson Quintet, Corinne West, Mamadou Diabate
We hear it's a wonderful festival, and we're psyched we were invited to play. Please come out and see us and all the tremendous musicians on the bill.
Stay tuned for album and gig updates, take care, and see you soon!
